As I am gathering my things to put into storage to prepare to relocate to Indonesia at the end of the month, I discovered that I have extra prints from my exhibition at Sacramento State last year. Raising funds to continue my project in Papua

I've launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise funds so I could continue my project documenting the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Papua via emphas.is.   Please help out in anyway by getting involved or sharing this link.  Below is a short video that I made to introduce my project, my proposal, and a list of rewards for backers. 

Summary:

Papua is the largest province in Indonesia and it’s home to approximately 1% of Indonesia’s population. However, approximately 40% of all HIV/AIDS cases in Indonesia are located in Papua.  Currently, Papua has the highest HIV/AIDS infection rate in the country, 15 times higher than the national average and the highest HIV/AIDS prevalence outside of Africa.

Indigenous Papuans are also deprived of the essential awareness of HIV/AIDS and the knowledge of how to prevent infection.  Those who are suspected of having the HIV virus have restricted access to get immediate testing and indigenous Papuans already living with HIV/AIDS or ODHA are lacking sufficient care and counseling.

The plight of indigenous Papuans is under documented.  There are very few articles and images depicting the issue accurately and thoroughly.

Project Aim:

The aim of Against All Odds is to produce an in depth photo essay examining some of the factors responsible for the pandemic level of HIV/AIDS among indigenous Papuans.  Ultimately, I seek to be a catalyst that raises awareness of the numerous flaws within the status quo and puts out a call for immediate actions to remedy this dire situation.  In the end, I want to promote the development of improved methods in preventing the spread of HIV and provide essential aid for indigenous Papuans living with AIDS.

Photo Essay and Multimedia:

The finished essay will be submitted to traditional news outlets. I will also create a multimedia piece consisting of images, audio interviews, and video.

Mini-Books

I will also create a mini-book that will be sent to select NGOs, influential policy makers, and health organizations both to raise awareness as well as provide accurate and updated references to stress immediate actions that must be taken to remedy the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Papua.

Our Collaboration:

I welcome and encourage everyone to take part in this project. Each supporter will receive behind the scenes access to this project. I will share as much I can throughout this journey.  Also, everyone will have the opportunity to help me select photos for the final edit of the book. 

How Funds Will Be Used:

Your support will help offset costs of airfare, local transport, fixer, food and lodging for 6 months, multimedia and printing.

Why Me:

Papua is classified as a restricted area by the Indonesian government and it’s almost impossible for foreign journalists to gain access and conduct independent research. I am the right person for this task due to my Indonesian background, fluency of the main language, and established ties with local NGOs and key figures.

End Goal:

Awareness, prevention, and sufficient treatment and care are the cornerstones of an effective response to contain the spread of HIV and provide a better quality of life to indigenous Papuans living with AIDS.  To ensure the welfare and  longevity of the indigenous Papuan population and culture these essentials must be guaranteed. Together, with your direct support and involvement, we could spark these developments and provide vital aid to indigenous Papuans.

POYi Emerging Vision Incentive Finalist

Recently I was chosen as a finalist to (POYi) Pictures of the Year Emerging Vision Incentive for my ongoing project documenting the HIV/AIDS epidemic in Papua.  I am very honored to receive this recognition.  I am going back to Indonesia this coming September and I will be using the funds I am receiving to continue this project.

Launch 2011

SacTown Mag asked me to photograph Launch, a festival connecting people with art, music, fashion, and design.  This year's event was held at Greens Hotel in Del Palso Blvd. in Sacramento.  It was a pretty cool event which ended around 1am.  I was pretty exhausted at the end of the night since I had my 12-8 shift prior at The Bee.  Here are some of the images I shot.

Sacramento Bee Internship (Mid-Progress)

I've reached the halfway mark of my internship with the Sacramento Bee.  I've shot various assignments, from food to sports, things that I wouldn't normally shoot.  I've also learned more about my hometown that I didn't know before and met a lot of wonderful people.  I approached each assignment as a challenge.  I shoot the "normal" shots of what is expected but then I push it further adding my own twist.  Sometimes those photos didn't get published and sometimes they do.  But, shooting for the Bee gives me great access and an opportunity to take more risks.  Often time, I only have 10 minutes to make a picture and sometime I have to drive around town to find a photo that illustrate the weather in Sacramento (this is by far my least favorite since my car has no AC so I am sweating driving around in 100 degree weather).  Nevertheless, these assignments have pushed my creativity and helped improve my overall skills and approach as a photographer.  Click on the title below the photo to read the article.

This is an article on hundreds of thousands of bats living under the Causeway connecting Davis and Sacramento.  This was a fun assignment because I love nature and and we get to ride around in this tank looking vehicle that could float in water.  However, we were eaten by blood sucking mosquitos.

This story is on Rick Bermingham, 5th ranked horse-shoe pitcher in the world.  I didn't know such thing exists but I spent less than 15 minutes taking some photos during his practice before the reporter arrived to interview him.  I found it a lot easier to take photos without the reporter around so I tend to arrive earlier than I am supposed to so I could chat and put my subjects at ease.

Another food story but this time I had to photograph a couple of firemen make dinner for their whole crew to prepare for an upcoming competition at the State Fair.

This is a story on a family who started a fundraiser to help injured children in Libya.  I took the photo below and I thought it would make it to the paper but instead they chose another photo (3 down).  But, in this photo below, Ali, 12, watches Al Jazeera in his dining room to get updates on the events taking place in Libya.

I've never shot tennis before so this was very challenging to me.  I emailed Al Bello who was my team leader at Eddie Adam. I figured if anyone could give me a crash course in shooting tennis, he is the man that could help me.  20 minutes later he called me and gave me lots of great tips.  My photo of Serena Williams made the front cover of the Sports section.  Thanks Al.

It has been surprisingly cool in Sacramento this summer and it was due to La Nina.  My assignment was to illustrate how the people in Sacramento take advantage of this great weather.  I came across Quetzalcoatl Citlalli Aztec Danc group practicing at SouthSide Park.  In this photo below, they honor their ancestors in 4 cardinal directions before the start of their practice.  Unfortunately, the photo didn't get published, rather it was the baseball photo.
